Mindfulness & creative arts in Sierra Leone

While mindfulness practices have found their way into many people’s lives these days, my personal mindfulness journey has its roots in Freetown in Sierra Leone. Prior to my time in Sierra Leone, I had read about meditation, but little did I know about what was lying ahead of me when I signed up for two eight week mindfulness courses, led by Julia Emes. Little did I know about the people that I would meet and the impact such seemingly simple practices “to connect with the present moment, non-judgmentally” would have on my life.

This is not about me though, here I would like to introduce you to Sulcut and Francess, two talented creative artists and mindfulness practitioners and teachers with a deep commitment to making a positive impact on the vulnerable and marginalised in Sierra Leone. They have experienced and witnessed firsthand how creativity and mindfulness can uplift spirits and provide a sense of peace - no matter the context a person finds themselves in.

In February 2023, they came together as 'The Peace Ambassadors', a home-grown, non-profit organisation based in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Together, as 'The Peace Ambassadors' they are on a mission to provide resources and well-being activities to boost mental and physical health and encourage creative expression amongst vulnerable and marginalised communities in Sierra Leone.

Supporting the Peace Ambassadors

Over the past years, they have not only developed and grown themselves but have also become ready to launch their own non-profit organisation, 'The Peace Ambassadors'.

However, to continue their work in Freetown’s correctional centers, undergo further training and grow their organisation to expand in terms of outreach and also develop a programme and business model that supports their livelihoods, I support them pro bono with long lasting professional experience in international development, as well as my coaching and mentoring skills.
